Who's Prisoner Are You?
I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called,
2 With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love;
3 Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
7 But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.
8 Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, He led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.
Paul wrote the books of Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians and Philemon… commonly known as the prison or captive epistles… While the prison epistles reflect Paul’s earthly position as a prisoner of Rome, he makes it clear that his captivity was first and foremost to Christ.
When a person goes to jail… you know who the captor is – it’s obvious… but when you are a prisoner of your own mind… your own heart… figuring out who is the captor is not as easily seen…
You don’t get to call the shots anymore… you are not in control!!!
It’s a strange feeling knowing that there’s no freedom where you are… you look around and all you see are bars… guards… others in the same barrel you’re in…
What happens when you can't see your captor?
Who have you given your freedoms over to? Because you’re a prisoner to someone or something… I’ve seen so many be prisoners to drugs and alcohol… I’ve seen others prisoners to gambling… I’ve seen others addicted to other things… and some are prisoners and don’t even realize it…
I’ve been a physical prisoner and a prisoner of addiction…
Anything can be an addiction… I was addicted to drugs, cigarettes … but many are addicted to sports… others addicted to tv shows… Just like anything can become an idol… anything can be an addiction…
Addiction – physically and mentally dependent on a particular substance, unable to stop taking it without incurring adverse effects; enthusiastically devoted to a particular thing or activity.
There’s a reason why there is government assistance to help someone quit smoking… there’s a reason why there are places to help people get off of drugs… it’s because addiction is so strong… that it’s difficult to do it on your own…
Such as sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, being bound in affliction and iron;
The Hebrew word for affliction means… misery!! Poverty!!!
The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;
Jesus quoted this later in Luke 4
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised
Can I remind you that Jesus has led captivity captive… what captivated you… what held you captive whether by the enemy or your own will… Jesus has set you free… for he that the Son has set free is free indeed…
And we become captive by the Lord and like Paul… no matter where we are… we’re not concerned about the condition of our situation… we’re a prisoner for Christ’s sake!!!
You don’t have to be bound anymore… you don’t have to be a captive to your past… you don’t have to be captivated by sin…
If you want to be set free… lift your hands and lift your voices right now!!!
And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
